Task 3 - Institutional Context (12B cover)

• Refer to booklet  planning tasks / institutional context.
• Task: Find an independent production of a horror film (US, UK or worldwide) and outline significant aspects of the production and marketing campaign.  (You could use Vertigo Films)
• Upload the trailer or opening sequence (embed if you can)
• Use the sub-headings Production: and then bullet point.  Then Distribution and bullet point.  Use as many film industry terms as you can.

Deadline for this task is Friday 21 November. 

Task 2 - Location Reccie Planning (12B cover work)

• Blog post titled:  Group:  Location Reccie Planning.  Then…(bullet points as below with visual evidence)
• Purpose: Outline the purpose of the location reccie to wilderness woods.
• Risk Assessment: What is a risk assessment and what potential hazards have you identified at this location?  How are you going to minimise risk?  (outline main ideas)
•  Planning: What are your ideas for using this location in preparation for your coursework?  (bullet point as many as you have at this point) 

Task 1 - Opening Sequence Horror Film

We looked at an iconic scene from Psycho (Hitchcock, 1960) - the shower scene and talked about significant film language techniques.

• Your first task on the blog is to find an interesting film opening from the horror genre, possibly a sub-genre that you are considering emulating.
• You embed a link (if possible) and then bullet point significant film language techniques:  ie. camera, editing, sound, mis-en-scene. Eg. you could comment on pov, cutting rate, low key lighting, costume.. 
• You then link points to connotations, conventions of sub-genre, effect on audience…
• Titles of posts must be uniform so as this is an individual post:
  KJ: (your initials plus colon) Title Sequence Analysis – Psycho (Hitchcock, 1960) ((insert title, your film etc))

Well done to you all for your excellent research and practical tasks this term.  Over the holidays you will need to do the following:

1. Check over your blog contributions
Have you completed all the tasks we have done this term to the best of your ability?

2. Comment and collaborate
Have you commented on each other's research?  Read the findings from your team member's research?

3. Finalise treatment / concept
Check you are clear about your proposed concept and are happy with treatment

4 Location Recce
Make sure you have completed a location recce (with risk assessment)

5. Test your idea to its target audience
make sure that you test your idea with as many horror fans as possible using SurveyMonkey

6. Prepare the pitch
Work on completing your section of the pitch, ready to put together with your group in the first lesson back.

Please complete the following tasks for our lesson tomorrow:

1. Both film clip analysis need to be up on the blog, improvements made to analysis of ideology and any other changes / additions that I've requested
2. Wilderness Woods post (1 per group) - your clip, sample risk assessment, call sheet and a detailed analysis of what you learnt in terms of filmmaking and the logistical organisation needed
3. Technical analysis (1 per student) - choose a clip that is in the style of the kind of opening that you would like to do and do a shot by shot breakdown of it.  This should be to a clip other than the ones you have already analysed.  See task and exemplar below:

Technical analysis

Choose an opening from a film in the genre that you are interested in making.  Make sure you choose one that you think is in a style that you could potentially make yourself.  Carry out the following analysis:

1. Carry out a detailed technical analysis of the first 2 mins: describe and list the shots in the sequence, making a note of mise-en-scene and transitions:
         ECU of hand cuts to
         CU of needle sewing book, with overlaying editing effect  dissolves to
         handwritten font for producer credits on black screen top left fade to black
         man's mouth licking lips cuts to...
2.  Think about the soundtrack.  How many layers of sound are there?  How does it help establish an enigma / create dramatic tension?
3. What have you learnt from this technical analysis?  Reflect on the filmmaking techniques used and how effective they are at 'hooking' the audience

This is very well presented, however he could have discussed sound more explicitly.  He doesn't have a summary at the end, however he has been analytical throughout the table
